Côte d’Ivoire’s Children Back in School After Five-Month Long Conflict

Côte d’Ivoire’s children are back in school after a five-month long conflict ravaged the country. UNICEF reports that 85 percent of schoolchildren in the area have returned to school. Although the report is positive also reveals a weakness in the educational system. Most of the schools are short on chairs, desks and working restrooms. A whopping 80 percent of the schools don’t have desks; and approximately 75 percent of the schools don’t have bathrooms.  In addition a third of the teachers are not back in the schools. Côte d’Ivoire’s Education Minister is encouraged by the student turnout, but recognizes that 83,000 children have still not returned to school.
