Programs for Latin America and the Caribbean
Our Latin American and Caribbean Programs prepare underserved Afro-descendant, Indigenous and other marginalized populations to create lasting social change in their communities.
Phelps Stokes is committed to promoting economic empowerment, education, and leadership development opportunities in Latin America and the Caribbean. Phelps Stokes’ work in this region takes into account Afro-Latino and Indigenous perspectives on culture, identity and the environment in order to provide information and knowledge that is relevant to the emerging leaders and their communities.

Afro-Latino Leadership Initiative
Through its Afro-Latino Leadership Initiative, Phelps Stokes is developing a pipeline of principled, culturally and globally aware emerging Afro-Latino leaders who understand the importance of education as well as servant leadership. Ultimately, these emerging leaders will be able to realize the full innovative and productive potential of their communities in order to create a just and diverse Latin America and Caribbean, where all have an equal opportunity of succeeding.
The Afro-Latino Leadership Initiative provides leadership development, public service, and other opportunities to Afro-Latino students studying in the United States and Latin America. The program creates collaborative networks between institutions of higher learning in the United States and Latin America that primarily serve the Afro-descendent population.
Currently, the Afro-Latino Leadership Initiative is focusing its activities in Colombia, with plans to expand to other countries. Ultimately, it will serve the Afro-descendant population throughout Central America, South America and the Caribbean.
Convening Leaders
Phelps Stokes also acts as a convener for policy dialogue in order to help develop appropriate conceptual frameworks, provide policy analyses and facilitate dialogues on development policy options that will be sensitive to and aware of Afro-Latino and Indigenous concerns and perspectives.
