Since its inception, Phelps Stokes has been a beacon for burgeoning leaders who dare to think differently about the world around them. Established in 1911 by the bequest of U.S. philanthropist Caroline Phelps Stokes, it is the only organization exclusively focused on strengthening communities in Africa and the Americas with a proven model that finds and nurtures bold thinking, connects visionary leaders with needed resources and inspires new initiatives and institutions that go on to transform communities.
Phelps Stokes has a long, proud history of helping such pioneering individuals and organizations. Landmark institutions that can trace their roots to our support include the United Negro College Fund, Jackie Robinson Foundation, American Indian College Fund, Association of Black American Ambassadors, South African Institute for Race Relations, International Youth Foundation, Caribbean Cultural Center and numerous Historically Black Colleges and Universities. When W.E.B. Dubois could not raise the money he needed to create the first Black encyclopedia, we did not hesitate to offer strategic counsel and financial support.
But with this legacy comes a responsibility to keep inspiring bold new solutions to our society’s most pressing challenges.
Today, through our partnerships, fellowships, advocacy programs, research studies and incubation services, Phelps Stokes remains on the cutting edge of social and economic justice.
