Phelps Stokes Hosts Delegation of African Leaders
Phelps Stokes Hosted 19 Women Leaders from sub-Saharan Africa.
The International Visitor Leadership program division of Phelps Stokes recently designed and implemented a three-week professional exchange program for 19 emerging female leaders from throughout sub-Saharan Africa. The group spent one week in Washington, DC where they participated in a day long leadership workshop conducted by Carapace Consulting, and had meetings at American University’s Women and Politics Institute with Ambassador Connie Morella among others, Vital Voices Global Partnership, the US Department of State’s Office on Global Women’s Issues with Ambassador Melanne Verveer, and the League of Women Voter’s.
From Washington, DC the group traveled to Lincoln, Nebraska where they met with leaders of the Native American community and discussed women’s issues at the state level. Following Lincoln, the English speakers of the group traveled to Santa Fe, New Mexico while the French speakers traveled to Reno, NV. Both groups focused on women in the judiciary as well as local women’s issues. The group reconvened in New Orleans where they looked at issues of transparency and good governance in local politics, the role of women in economic and community development and women’s health. While all participants identified different things they learned on the trip the common thread among all was that regardless of their current title they are all leaders and will return home ready to effect change in their communities.
