Phelps Stokes is pleased to announce that The Inaugural of the World Summit of African Descendants is scheduled to occur August 18-21, 2011 in the city of La Ceiba, Honduras. The Summit is a result of The United Nations resolution 64/169 proclaiming the year 2011 as the International Year of the Peoples of African Descent. Six hundred people are expected to attend, hailing from every continent.

2011 is the year of the Afrodescendants. In celebration of this occasion, there will be a summit focusing on the issues surrounding Afrodescendants around the world. The summit is scheduled to take place August 18-21, 2011 in the city of La Ceiba, Honduras. The First World Summit of Afrodescendants announced its launch May 26, 2011 at the Pan American Health Organization building in downtown Washington, D.C.

On Thursday July, 14, 2011, Phelps Stokes' Programs for Africa & Freedom Endowment will be hosting a Palaver Hut titled “Guinean Girls and Women Empowerment and Leadership Conference.” The Palaver Hut will be located at InterAction here in Washington, D.C. from 12:00pm to 2:00 pm. Palaver Huts are symposiums that create an environment of productive dialogue on an important issue.

<p> The U.S. International Coordination Committee and the Minnesota Yoruba Cuba Association have partnered-up to host &quot;Shattering the Silence&quot;, a benefit concert for the First World Summit of African Descendants event that will be held in La Ceiba, Honduras from August 18-21, 2011. &quot;Shattering the Silence&quot; benefit concert will be held&nbsp; on Friday, July 15, 2011 at 9:00 pm - 12:30 am.</p>

On Saturday, May 14, 2011, Phelps Stokes launched the first session of the Health Leadership Development Initiative sponsored by the Merck Co. Inc. This two-year program targets Afro-Colombian high school students in Cali and Quibdo who have demonstrated an interest in studying public health at university.
