The Inaugural of the World Summit of African Descendants
Phelps Stokes is pleased to announce that The Inaugural of the World Summit of African Descendants is scheduled to occur August 18-21, 2011 in the city of La Ceiba, Honduras. The Summit is a result of The United Nations resolution 64/169 proclaiming the year 2011 as the International Year of the Peoples of African Descent. Six hundred people are expected to attend, hailing from every continent.
It has been estimated that more than 15 percent of the world’s population are African and of African descent. The Summit’s initiative is carried out by an international committee of 26 organizations from 18 countries and led by the Ethnic Community Development Organization (ODECO), an international human rights NGO founded in La Ceiba, Honduras to advocate for the integral sustainable development of Afro-Honduran communities.
The Summit is in strategic partnership with international development institutions, civil society organizations, governments, and international cooperation agencies whose philanthropy and programs are facilitating a new generation of global leaders.
The Summit objectives include :

Document and reach a consensus on strategies needed to generate stainstable development with identity and establish concrete funding to generate wealth

Define strategies and gain commitments from governments, multilateral development institutions, International development agencies, the private sector and civil society to empower Afro-descendent communities

Reach agreements for the implementation of the Decade of the African Descendent, the African Descendent Development Fund and the African Descent Parliament of the United Nations.
