Phelps Stokes Colombia
Phelps Stokes Colombia, loyal to the global tradition of the organization, is contributing to the social mobility of disadvantaged groups and to harmony between different ethnic groups in this Andean nation. Phelps Stokes Colombia achieves this mainly through the promotion of quality educational opportunities and leadership development with an emphasis on Afro-Colombian and Indigenous populations. In fulfilling this mandate, Phelps Stokes Colombia has developed several activities, among which the following stand out: 1) a leadership training program for Afro-Colombian and Indigenous students prior to their postgraduate studies in the United States; 2) a program to strengthen legal offices (Legal Clinics) serving Afro-Colombian population (in Bogotá, Cali, Cartagena, Quibdó), with primary participation of universities in the network of universities that serve Afro-Colombian population; and 3) a leadership training program and college access for Afro-Colombian high school students in Cali and Quibdó. Also, in order to strengthen our presence in the country, Phelps Stokes Colombia is deepening its construction of strategic alliances with institutional and social actors that share an interest in serving our target populations. In that manner, Phelps Stokes Colombia is expanding the thematic space needed to accompany the communities we serve, in order to address the challenges they face.
