What is Phelps Stokes you  say?


For 100 years, we've had a rich history of promoting social justice in Africa and the Americas, often ahead of its time and despite hostility, resistance, and a relatively small endowment. Our founder Caroline Phelps Stokes, was one of the first women philanthropists in  the United States.Phelps Stokes was first established in 1911 and one of our founding objectives 100 years ago and today is to overcome inequities in education, to benefit women, African American, Native Americans, Afro-descendants in the Americas, and Africans in Africa. Who do we help?

Through our 100 year history, we have made great strides in identifying, investing in, and transforming underserved communities in the United States, Africa, Latin America, & the Caribbean. Phelps Stokes continues to enhance and strengthen collaborative networks between U.S. colleges, universities, and other relevent organizations and their counterparts in Latin America. Landmark institutions that can trace their roots to support from Phelps Stokes include the United Negro College Fund, American Indian Higher Education Consortium, and numerous Historically Black Colleges and Universities. In addition, Phelps Stokes was one of the two institutions that participated in the airlift that brought Barack Obama Sr., the father of current United States President Barack H. Obama, to the United States.

Phelps Stokes' Mission
Phelps Stokes mission is to develop the educational leadership capacity of under-served communities in Africa, the African Diaspora, and the Americas with particular attention to the needs of people of color and indigenous Indians of the Americas.
 

How do we help those we serve?

Phelps Stokes has effected change and has made historic investments insupport of  leaders, organizations and programs that advance education and promote social transformation. Through its partnerships, advocacy, scholarships, fellowships, and applied research, Phelp Stokes has been and continues to be a vital force on Co-Production: working together for a strong community and more effective social services.

What we are looking to do in the Future

Phelps Stokes hopes to foster a new generation of global leaders from marginalized communities, and a global network of individuals and community organizations dedicated to creating positive social change for under-served and under-resourced communities. Our mission is to develop the educational leadership  capacity of  under-served communities in Africa, the African Diaspora, and the Americas with particular attention to the needs of people of color and indigenous Indians of the Americas.
